When it comes to drones, no brand has become as well-renowned as DJI. This Chinese company is hands-down the most popular drone manufacturer today.  It has released drones and applications that target casual drone pilots, photographers, videographers and even businesses. Simply put, DJI is the Michael Jordan of drone manufacturers.

DJI, or Da-Jing Innovations Science and Technology Co. Ltd., is the brainchild of Frank Wang. The company started in 2006 in a single room office in Shenzhen, Guandong, China. After more than a decade, the firm has grown into a $1-billion company, employing more than 3,000 workers worldwide. It controls more than 70% of the global drone market.

The first two DJI Phantoms

The DJI first made an impression in the consumer drone market with the Phantom RC quadcopter. Released in 2013, the DJI Phantom 1 was a few hundred dollars cheaper than most of its contemporaries. Aside from its price tag, the first DJI Phantom was easy to fly compared to its competitors thanks to the use of physical joysticks in its controller. It was also easy to assemble, plus its tough construction made it very popular among first-time pilots.

The company then followed it up the Phantom 2 less than a year after the Phantom 1’s release. The Phantom 2 corrected most of the flaws of its predecessor. For example, it had a longer flight time of 20 minutes compared to the 10 minutes of the Phantom 1. It also had an optional gimbal for video stability. It featured an Intelligent-Orientation Control or IOC function that made the Phantom 2 a lot easier to fly than the original Phantom.

The Phantom 2 was such a big hit that many of its features were later copied and used by other drone makers. It has also been used in numerous TV advertisements, shows, sports events and movies.

DJI Phantom 3

The DJI Phantom 3, released in 2015, further cemented the status of DJI as the world’s premier maker of consumer drones.  It comes in different models with cameras that offer up to 4K resolution.

The base model, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard, features a 2.7K camera.  It also has a simple controller that makes it very easy to fly especially for novice pilots.

The DJI Phantom 3 4K, meanwhile, boasts of a 4K camera. The Phantom 3 Advanced has a 2.7 K camera although it has better range and a more reliable video streaming function compared to the Phantom 3 4K.

The DJI Phantom 3 Professional, on the other hand, features a 4K camera. It is also capable of streaming videos at 720 pixels. Moreover, it has a faster battery charging function than the other models under the Phantom 3 series.

Latest DJI Consumer Drone

The Phantom 4 is the latest in DJI’s growing range of consumer drones. The latest model, the Phantom 4 Advanced, features a 20 megapixel camera capable of recording 4K videos at 60 frames per second.  It can also fly up to 30 minutes. It is considered as the smartest consumer drone available today.
